Naperville Public Library will Host the 74-Foot Long “Digital Mobile”
Public invited to experience downloading eAudiobooks, eBooks, music & videos for free!!

The Naperville Public Library will host the Digital Bookmobile, an immersive download experience inside a 74-foot, high-tech tractor-trailer, on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Dr. Readers of all ages are invited to try digital downloading through interactive demonstrations and experience the Naperville Public Library’s eAudiobook, eBook, music, and video download services at this free event. Library card holders may also check out and download digital titles any time, anywhere by visiting www.naperville-lib.org.

“Our downloadable collection is one of the fastest growing circulation areas.” said Rohini Bokka, Technical Services Manager. Right now we own nearly 10,000 titles that may be downloaded to computers, MP3s, iPods, PDAs and other devices. Since we started our collection 3 years ago, we’ve supported almost 30,000 downloads. People in Naperville love the convenience of downloading anytime, anywhere, 24/7. I am especially excited to share that we purchased selected titles from OverDrive that can be downloaded to an iPod now.”

The Digital Bookmobile is housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. This 74-foot community outreach vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile. The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore Naperville Public Library’s download service. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and download and enjoy eBooks, eAudiobooks, music, and videos from the library.

Patrons can take advantage of the download service 24/7 when they visit the Naperville Public Library’s website, www.naperville-lib.org. From there, they can browse the growing collection of best-sellers, new releases, and classic titles, and check out a digital title with a valid library card. Once downloaded, digital titles can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to supported mobile devices. Many audio titles can also be burned to a CD. At the end of the loan period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the digital collection. There are never late fees or damaged items.

The Digital Bookmobile is operated by OverDrive, Inc. The Naperville Public Library also offers downloadable books and videos from NetLibrary and MyLibraryDV.

To check out and download digital eAudiobooks, eBooks, music, and videos, visit www.naperville-lib.org

Following Lincoln When He Followed Douglas --
The 1858 Lincoln Douglas Debates with Georgiann Baldino
In 2009, America will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. This year, Illinois is commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Learn more about these debates on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

In 1858, Lincoln began his campaign for the Illinois Senate by following Stephen A. Douglas around the state in order to take advantage of the crowds. The candidates debated for hours in seven different Illinois cities, battling each other to gain support for their views of America’s future. Our speaker Georgiann Baldino’s presentation takes the audience 2,100 miles, criss-crossing Illinois, providing images of the towns, the historical markers and memorials to these debates that shaped our country’s future, which took on the dangerous topics of the day, including slavery and states rights. The manner in which these debates were held still influences the political process in this early part of the 21st century.

Online registration is required to attend this program. Register through the Library’s website, www.naperville-lib.org, or at any of the service desks at the three Library buildings.

“Sin in the Second City:
Madams, Ministers, Playboys and the Battle
for America’s Soul” with Author Karen Abbott
The Naperville Public Library welcomes “New York Times” best-selling author Karen Abbott on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room, Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.

Their world famous “club” often entertained the likes of John D. Rockefeller, Al Capone and Edgar Lee Masters. And where there are sinners, there are crusaders. Ms. Abbott’s book also examines the reformers of the day, who were determined to see the brothels go and save America’s soul. Ms. Abbott will be available to sign copies of her book at the conclusion of the program.

Rick Kogen, Chicago Tribune columnist and WGN radio personality, will make a special guest appearance with Abbott. Kogen is also well-known for writing about the history of Chicago neighborhoods as well as relaying tales about contemporary Chicago characters.

Sones de Mexico Ensemble
Chicago’s premier Mexican folk music group, Sones de Mexico Ensemble, specializes in son, a rich and lively Mexican music tradition and its many regional styles. Over twenty-five folk, string, percussion and wind instruments are featured in their performance, and they share with the audience each one’s history and the part that they play in the music. They have performed throughout the United States, and are under the direction of Victor Pichardo and Rene Cardoza, previously a dancer with Mexico’s National Folkloric Ballet Company.
