Lib Policy No. 255: Public Access Computers - Internet User's Agreement ( Print Version) |
The Naperville Public Library offers public access computers as an information resource. Selected
public access computers offer patron access to the Internet.
The Internet enhances the Library’s existing collections with electronic resources creating a gateway to the world of information. This resource contains material that may be inaccurate or of a controversial nature. The Library does not monitor nor control the content and cannot be held responsible. Use of the computer workstations with Internet access, except for “express” workstations in the Adult Services departments, is limited to holders of a valid NPL library card and to registered reciprocal borrowers who have signed the Internet User Agreement or the “click through” version of the Internet User Agreement. Like library cards, user agreements are non-transferable.A parent or guardian is required to sign the Internet User Agreement for minors. NPL provides computers with limited Internet access in the Children’s areas. Limited Internet access may not block all material that users might find offensive. Parents may wish to supervise their children’s Internet sessions. Children under the age of 8 must have a parent/guardian present at all times while using the Internet. The person signing the Internet User Agreement may designate that the user receive limited (filtered) or unlimited Internet access when logging on to a public access computer outside the Children’s areas.Public access computers may be used only for legal purposes. Illegal or prohibited acts may include but are not limited to: unauthorized copyright use, viewing obscene material, violating copyright or software licenses, attempting to/or damaging library equipment/software/software configurations, compromising system security, libeling, slandering, misrepresentation, solicitation, and harassment. Use of personal software on public access computers is limited to selected workstations in the computer labs. Illegal/prohibited use of the public access computers will result in suspension of computer privileges and may lead to loss of Library privileges. Illegal acts may be subject to prosecution by local, state or federal authorities. A patron whose library card is delinquent as defined in Policy 213.5 is not eligible to use a public access computer. The Naperville Public Library offers Internet users three levels of access. |
Please note: Filtering technology is not perfect. Filters can both under-block (allow undesired material through) or over-block (prohibit access to harmless Websites.) The Library cannot guarantee that its Internet filters will block all inappropriate sites. I choose to abide by the terms of the Internet User’s Agreement. I choose (check one). |
